Essay, quantum computing, legal mumbo jumbo……

Filed under: article — aurojit @ 1:37 pm

Most of ze time zat shud have rightly been spent writing zis blog entry, was spent in a more productive fashion, writing an essay as an answer to a question asked by ze makers of The Butterfly Effect (oh and also in day dreaming, playing with my lenses, and throwing a 2X converter out of ze window), essentially a question based on a statement in Harllan Ellison (as a different entity as compared to Larry Ellison), essentially Ellison mentions something abt how there is no randomness or chaos, but simply a complicated underlying pattern, and umm thats something with which I don’t completely agree, but what the hell I’m not gonna write all of zat again so here’s a little thingee for u (all zat is in italics is ze essay)....

“God doesn’t play dice with the universe” so said Einstein on being told that quantum mechanics dictated a random universe, and though the rest of the physicists and mathematicians working on the principle scorned at him at that point in time, they weren’t too happy about the randomness themselves, which is why we have theories like the chaos theory coming up to bring order to chaos.

But at the end of the day aren’t mathematicians, and physicists merely trying to fit inputs into outputs, to formulate the one pattern which given n inputs would produce n outputs from known data, a formula which would relate the past (which we know) and the present (which we see) with a logically plausible set of steps, after all logic is all that proves a mathematical formulation correct or incorrect. Let’s admit it, we as humans love order, chaos scares us, because in a chaotic environment we aren’t the rulers, chaos is. All our religions, all our gods, and all our spiritualism are little more than ideas which promote the fact that there is more to this universe than the chaos that we see, that there is an underlying yet unexplained pattern to it all, the “bhraman” as the Gita puts it. Which after all is what Mr. Ellison also tries to convince us about in his essay.

Though what happens to all religion and all of the chaos theory and all of Mr. Ellison’s essay if randomness and patterns aren’t just two ways of looking at the same thing. If it turns out that chaos is order and order is chaos, that what you prefer is an innate, quality something that is preprogrammed, what if it turns out that our genetic heritage forces us to love patterns and order more than chaos, what if there is another race in some distant part of this universe which unlike us is searching for chaos in all the patterns that surround them, a race which loves chaos instead of order. Would that convince us humans that chaos and order are one in the same thing, would that convince us that our search for hidden patterns is not a search after all since all of the chaos that we see are as good as the patterns we are searching for, would it convince us enough to realize that Mr. Ellison’s statement is neither completely correct nor completely incorrect because there is chance since there can’t be chance without chaos, and the whole is chance and chaos, but in the midst of all of this there are hidden patterns also, and the whole universe is a huge hidden pattern also. After all fitting things into patterns is merely an attempt to find repetition in randomness, and a thing can’t be completely random unless it repeats.

Umm ya that was kindda short, but I was working with a 500 word limit, which doesn’t really allow me to fit in something bigger than zat…...

A recent look thru my DDJ archives have convinced me zat quantum computing is suddenly more important to governments than it actually shud be, after all quantum computers can’t be used much overground, r at least 50 years from development and provide no real advantage in normal usage, which is not to say zat zey don’t have a certain amt of innate parallelism, just zat ze parallelism available is not all zat usable becoz zey most run in a probabilistic fashion, which to say zat a shift from normal to quantum computers won’t really increase ze speed at which ur os starts up or word worx, nemore zan a shift from 32 to 64 bit computing wud….... But then again governments sponsor projects which help zem make war, so how is quantum computing important to war…..... Hmm well quantum computing is abt as useful to a war effort as ze bombes (thats ze polish comps not ze boom boom thingees) were to world war 2, which is to say a quantum computer can break nething encoded on a normal computer, there’s a proof for zis, and it can do this in probabilistic time, which is to say zat it can do it fast enuf and umm it’ll always work, there won’t be ne encryption algorithm which is really safe from a quantum computers attack, and realizing this stoooooooopid fact has suddenly also made me realise zat I won’t be able to buy one of those nice quantum computer thingees netime soon, which is kindda sad ‘coz all of DDJs quantum algos, specially ze one which reduces search complexities from a minimum of O(n) to O(?n) won’t be something zat i can experiment with netime soon, which is kindda sad ‘coz I really liked ze idea of working with amplitudes instead of pure locations….............

Ze chimp conspiracy ray has finally found a worthy target, it destroyed ze nice 2x converter which was supposed to help me thru out me journey today…. Umm a 2x converter kindda doubles ze focal length of a lens while at ze same time reducing ze amt of incident light by half….. Now zis particular 2x converter is abt as old as me and has been pretty trustworthy with its work, but then like most of ze other things on zis earth it wasn’t designed keeping chimp conspiracyy rays in mind….. Somehow ze coupling from ze lenses aperture to ze 2x converters aperture, which kindda tells ze camera how open ze aperture is has stopped working…. My dad feels its a lack of grease, though me feels zat its more like a spring has stopped working, but either ways its sad ‘coz with zis one gone, I don’t really have a 2x and my dad doesn’t have an extra one lying arnd, so me shalth have 2 make do without ze benefits of having one (many me assures u, specially since me finally agreed with dad and am gonna be carrying a nice little monopod), which is kindda sad ‘coz I have been looking forward to using it all zis week…..... Me guessed zat since ze damn chimps failed in zeir plans of deferring me trip, zey went on an overdrive and aimed it at things zat i was gonna carry….......... Hmm either ways me still have coke to keep me company thru out ze trip and more zan make up for ze loss of ze 2x…..........

Hmm after ze umpteenth discussion with my friend abt the ys and hows of not using names on zis blog, me shalth settle zis once and for all…... Not mentioning names allows me some amt of deniability which as any lawyer wud tell u is abt the next best thing u can have to innocence, and alibi, and an uncertain mental status, since u can always deny referring to ze plaintiff during all of ur misdemeanor… SO I NAME NO ONE WHO KNOWS ME OR KNOWS A FRIEND OF MINE, HOWEVER I RESTRICT THE NO NAMING POLICY TO THE SECOND CIRCLE ONLY, AND DON’T REALLY MIND NAMING FRIENDS OF FRIENDS OF FRIENDS, of course zis in no way means zat u shud stop being friends with me ‘coz zat shall make meeeeeeeee verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry sadddddddddddddd and me shall cry and jump (not good throws ze earth out of its orbit), and throw a tantrum in general if u try doing nething like zat….

Neways me am off to bharatpur for ze weekend which in essence means zat posting to zis blog wud be suspended for ze weekend or at least sunday afternoon, which further means zat u can finally take a break from listening to (even though I didn’t force u to listen) a panda’s endless babble…......

Ze Panda
off to dream some more abt Bharatpur…...............

P.S.: Interestingly a whole month of blogging and being deferred has come to pass…....
